A Yoga Mat: A space to practise Yoga postures. The Yoga mat presents itself in many shapes, sizes and prices: all that is required is a sturdy mat, to compliment you and your practice - the preference and choice is yours. By using your own mat, you are building an association between your practice and the mat. Think of your mat as your favourite toy, something that provides a deep containment and helps to soothe you. (The toy in psychological terms is seen as a transitional object. To help the child endure the idea of separation from the parent, from dependence to independence).
It’s simply good hygiene to have your own yoga mat, even if the studio or gym provides them. Reflect on the following, if you run regularly, would you use someone else’s trainers? Most likely not!
Good hygiene
Most of us know to wear flip-flops in the shower and changing rooms but yet fail to think about applying good hygiene practice to the Yoga mat. Who wants to sit in somebody else’s sweat for an hour? The closest comparison in terms of germs and bacteria would be sharing a toothbrush or a used towel, yuck!
Yoga is a barefoot practice, so the risk of funguses and athlete’s foot is high. Next time you are in child’s pose you are potentially resting in a slew of microbes that can cause skin infections, athlete’s foot, colds or flu.
Bacteria can survive for several hours while viruses can linger for weeks. Many yoga studios and gyms do not have adequate time for mat-cleaning practices. Bacteria colonies can move inside the mat as opposed to just the surface, so a quick wipe, may not do the job. So here are some good reasons for you to invest in your own mat.
The obvious reason would be: Hygiene. If you dislike: athlete’s foot, colds and flu! Also Yoga mats come in different lengths, width, thickness, textures and materials. If you are taller than average you might get an extra-long yoga mat. If you’re going to do faster tempo classes such as Vinyasa or Ashtanga, getting a good sticky Yoga mat with grip will make a huge difference. You’ll have the mat that is right for you.
Your mat will become your ‘sanctuary’ - your private space, much like a prayer mat, creating familiarity and connection. Your mat is like your loyal companion on your Yoga journey. The familiar indents created by you, allowing you to do Yoga anywhere.
Congratulations - You’ve just purchased yourself a portable health and fitness centre.
