Yin Yoga is a much slower paced, mostly floor based meditative style of yoga; focusing on holding passive floor poses for longer. The exact opposite of dynamic “yang” practices.
Yin targets the deeper connective tissues; such as fascia, ligaments and joints, rather than the muscles. Yin yoga has more of a focused emphasis on stillness, mindfulness and deep stretching
If you feel you are in need of calming, slowing down or simply allowing time to just be; then the practice of yin yoga might well be for you, by helping to provide refuge with some much needed time to unplug from the fast-paced world that we live in.
Yin yoga is more of a meditative practice in which poses are held for at least a couple of minutes (anywhere from 3-10 minutes of stillness) this stillness helps to support a profound physical and much deeper emotional release. A good number of props are also helpful in enhancing the yin experience, bolsters, bricks, blocks and yoga straps can provide more support for the body and allow for more softening, releasing and letting go of the weight of the body.
Who benefits from Yin Yoga...
Anyone who struggles to get up and down from the floor
People with tight muscles or joints athletes, runners, or those with sedentary lifestyle
Individuals seeking stress relief or emotional balance
Anyone looking to improve flexibility and joint mobility
Those interested in mindfulness or meditation practices
Yin Yoga is beneficial for both physical relaxation and mental calm, making it an ideal complement to more active forms of exercise or a busy lifestyle; fostering stress relief whilst enhancing flexibility and mobility, especially in the lower body, by targeting tension in the denser connective tissues.
The practice of yin yoga supports stress relief and inner calm, helping you to learn how to remain in stillness with slight discomfort, inviting you to bring about a deeper sense of balance and ease.
If you've never tried yin yoga - why not? What's holding you back...
